Originally from Louisiana, Brenda's family moved to Aiken in 1952 where she attended Aiken Elementary, Aiken Jr. High and Aiken High schools. Brenda's love of art began to flourish at Aiken High School under the instruction of Peggy Lambert and later, Marilyn Brown.
Her enthusiasm for painting was encouraged by a very generous Christmas gift of a wonderful set of professional oils and box easel from Dr. Jack Levy, for whom she worked as an x-ray technologist in the early 60's. Her ventures with oils continued sporadically through the 70's and early 80's while juggling the tasks of raising a very active family and serving as an official court reporter for the state courts of South Carolina.
Brenda began pursuing an avid interest in photography in the mid 70's. Her first darkroom consisted of a color-head and trays in a closet under the stairwell in her home, carrying water from the guest bathroom for the processing. She studied under Ginny Southworth at USCA and Billy Tullis at Aiken Technical College.
Upon retiring from her state court reporter position in the fall of 2004, Brenda began furthering her painting skills by studying acrylics under Sharon Taylor Padgett at the Aiken Center for the Arts, and turning some of her favorite photographs into acrylic paintings. She has exhibited both her photography and paintings locally and statewide. Her intentions are to capture the beauty of unusual people and places as God touches her heart in the moment.
Though only semi-retired from court reporting, Brenda finds time to be an active member of the Aiken Artist Guild, the Aiken Center for the Arts, and the Aiken County Camera Club, as well as being an active member of St. Thaddeus Episcopal Church in Aiken, and loves to travel.
Brenda has two wonderful daughters and a son who have produced five beautiful grandchildren, and a very supportive husband who shares her love of art and photography, and who does most of her framing. She says her plans are to continue to learn all she can as fast as she can.
