Christie West

After retiring from the Navy in 1982, I settled in the mountains of Oconee County , SC and spent the next 5 years building an Appalachian style log home, hand hewing logs taken from the property. After the home was finished I built a shop and spent the next 17 years making custom furniture.

At some point, I realized that I wanted to find a way to express some form of narrative in my work, and after taking classes in watercolor, I discovered marquetry. I took a class at John C Campbell Folk School and drawing on inspirations from reading, nature, and the voices in my heart, I have continued to refine and I like to think, redefine, what marquetry can be. I was never happy with the 2 dimensional cartoonish or the classical floral arrangements and German castles on the Rhine images that I was seeing.

My work has come to be categorized in portraits and figure studies, life scenes (flowers and birds), and the Fey. I have found inspiration from the Pre-Raphealites, Japanese and Chinese watercolors and wood block prints, Khalil Gibran and Arthur Wesley Dow.

I have had exhibitions at the Anderson Arts Center in Anderson , SC , the Pickens Art Museum , in Pickens , SC , and the Arts Center in Seneca , SC.

I have been juried into shows at the Anderson Arts Center , the Belton Center for the Arts, the Pickens Art Museum , the McCormick Center for the Arts, in Highlands and Brevard , NC .

I am a member and past President of the Aiken Artists' Guild, Secretary for the Board of Director's for the Salkehatchie Arts Center in Allendale , SC and on the Board of Directors for the Arts Council of Bamberg County, SC.
