Artist Statement
Painting brings me great joy. My hope is that my work reflects the beauty of nature and life, usually realistic, but sometimes abstract. My wish is that my paintings share the joy I have while painting with those who view my paintings.
My primary medium is watercolor. The water flows and carries colors, and in many ways, paints the pictures with me guiding and watching the painting develop. It is a medium quite opposite to the controlled approach of pencils, oils and thick acrylics. In fact, when I paint with acrylics, they are liquid with a lot of water still guiding the painting.
Information About the Artist
Gwen started painting when she was about 40 years old, taking continuing education classes at the University of South Carolina from A K Singley. While living in Columbia, she was a member of the Dutch Fork Art Association and the Trenholm Artist Guild. She had two one-man shows at the Weekend Gallery of the Columbia Art Museum. During this time she sold paintings primarily in South Carolina, but also across the United States from the state of Washington to Florida. After a few years, her art career was suspended as she got overcommitted by her employment, a 30-year career in state government and ten years as a consultant.
She and her husband moved to Monetta in Aiken County in 2002. They live on twenty-eight acres with ponds and woods and an abundance of wildlife. They have put most of the land in a nature conservancy so that the land will remain undeveloped and a haven for wildlife.
After retirement in 2008, she took a watercolor class with Judy Adamick and once painting again, has not been able to put her brushes down. She is currently a member of the Aiken Artists Guild and the Art Association of Ridge Spring.
Her work has been accepted into several juried shows and is displayed at the Gallery of the Art Association of Ridge Spring and Juniper, the local restaurant in Ridge Spring. Work may also be seen on the Art Association of Ridge Spring web site, http://sites.google.com/site/artassnridgespring.
